Grandson got a new psychiatrist (finally! His father keeps getting fired and changing insurance companies--but at least he works, so there's that). First visit went really well and I hope we can stick with this guy for a while. When you bounce around from insurance company to insurance company, treatment gets very sporadic and difficult. It took me hours on the phone every day for 2 weeks to find someone who takes the national insurance (I mean, United Healthcare is a huge company) and that is taking new patients. The new doctor gave us a list of the blood tests he wants to have done, and the brochure for the genetic testing to see what drugs might work better than others. I have heard of this, but insurance won't pay for it, so old grandma will be be picking up the tab, which is fine if it's gives us good, reliable information. We have noticed through trial and error that stimulants make things worse for him, even though one of his diagnoses is ADHD. But we're getting into other classes of drugs now and I just hate throwing stuff at this kid for weeks to see what sticks, or what will make it worse. Oh, and we had the pleasure of picking him up from school yesterday early because he was running around, wouldn't leave the library, trying to hit the classroom aide (who is a huge guy that he really likes), throwing books, taking off after another kid (who, in my deepest darkest fantasies, I would like to put both these boys in a ring with gloves on and let them pound the crap out of each other. Then maybe their nonsense would stop. Old school, I know...). Phew. So, to get back to my point, anyone had any experience with these tests? Thanks!
