Is anybody doing anything for fun?

I went to see a movie last Saturday, then hosted a small dinner party on Sunday. This weekend I'm going to some friends' Sunday night for dinner.

I'm always looking for new/clever ideas; what is everyone else doing for fun these days? How do you let off steam when life gets rough?

I got a new book, some new audiobooks to clean house by, and some new cross stitch stuff, including a new Halloween House Kit, the Christmas Ornament Issue of Just Cross Stitch magazine, and a BUNCH of new fibers to stitch with.

Am going to my parents to do my birthday and mom's and exSIL's (niece invited her, that is cool with us)

I even went to TWO garage sales today while I was out and waiting for my psychiatrist appointment!!! Got new shirts and shorts for Jess, shirts for me, some sterling silver jewelry for J for xmas, 2 new purses and a really really COOL messenger bag for J for school - all for TEN BUCKS!!!! One of the new purses from the garage sale is a Fossil, the other looks like a Vera Bradley but is a knockoff.

Anyone else? (BOY am I seeing a difference in me since we stopped the Arava! I am DOING things again.)

Anyone else doing anything fun??

I am driving 500 miles so that I can attend my 30th class reunion this weekend. :grins: I am half nervous and half excited. I have plans to meet up with a couple of old girlfriends, so all should be good. :)

My son is coming home - first time since June. That will be fun I hope.

I walk with- a few friends every week.

I need to make fun more of a priority. Sometimes it seems that survival is my primary mode. Life is too short. Thanks for the reminder Suz!!

My husband and I go out every Friday night for drinks and dinner. We used to go dancing every weekend but I have a problem shoulder right now so we have to wait til it gets better.

Hope everyone has a good weekend!

I am so lucky that I get my grandson every weekend. I have today off so am picking him up in a little bit. He is difficult child's son and even though difficult child isn't in his life, our family is and we love spending time with him. He is almost 2!

Hubby is coming home tonight - he is now working and living about 170 miles from here so that will be wonderful too!

Not too much exciting stuff at all!

This is such a GREAT question and I'm excited to see it here on a variety of levels.

I recall when husband and I were under too much stress with both our kids, that we went to see a counselor and she asked this question.

Right now, things are more or less okay (knock on wood). Certainly, we have stuff going on with difficult child, but nothing like it was in the past (crossing myself and lighting a candle...might take a few minutes! LOL!).

However....when I saw the title of your post...I recalled that we have put off having true fun in the last few weeks and this is NOT like us. We learned years ago that we had to set aside "fun" time in order to remain sane.

I do always take a few moments to read. It is my sanctuary. husband and I like to rent BB movies. Sometimes we order a pizza too. We need to do a little more...we have been stuck in a rut the last week or two...and do hope to get out this weekend.

by the way...we are thinking of having an election night dinner or dessert thing. However, we are not sure how that would go if we invited folks of varying political views. Therefore, we would have to probably invite people who were backing the same candidate or at least independent.

Thanks for the little push...:D

I have had LOTS of fun since having an empty nest. I found multiple social groups in my area through www.meetup.com, and have been going full blast. Happy hours, dinners out, movies, winery visits, game nights, book clubs, you name it. :)

My girls are reasonable stable for now, with gaps here and there.. but nothing overly dramatic. I'm enjoying it while I can.

Right now, I am having a blast redoing husband's wardrobe.
With his extreme weight loss (230 lbs and counting, now within 25 lbs of goal), literally NOTHING in his closet fits him anymore.

Since he doesn't need to go to the Big-And-Tall-Guy stores anymore, I've been dragging husband through the mall to try on clothes. It's like having a full-sized fully functional Ken doll to play with. (Playing Barbies was NEVER this much fun when I was a little girl)

Other than that, I've been keeping up with dance classes and going to the Dance Studio Socials on Friday nights. I get to go out dancing, without all the icky-ness of a bar, so it's lots of fun.

And...as ever, Little easy child keeps coming up with creative "exercises" for us to do. His latest one involves my pretending to be the tide, and having to raise and lower my arms and legs depending on whether the tide is coming in or going out, while he parks cars at the high water mark on my arms or legs. It's a heck of a workout, and WAY more fun than yoga.

I love the variety of activities I'm seeing here. :bravo:

When I was married, Rob's counselor always worked in the importance of Mom and Dad doing fun things independently...and doing fun things together as a family...and doing fun things without a difficult child in tow. It was to help maintain emotional balance.

Unfortunately, husband and I didn't practice it often enough and I'm sure it contributed to our marriage taking a nosedive. I figured a reminder to everyone might help so you don't make our same mistake.

You sound like a fun group! But we already knew that. :flowers:

I've been up to my armpits in Halloween costumes, but I love being creative and making them. We go annually on a Halloween campout with 18 friends and their families - the entire campground decorates (many on a large scale), then everyone dresses up and trick or treats. LOADS of fun. I like to sew and have been asked to make a lot of costumes this year, so I am in the process of making 3 saloon girls, a short and sassy pirate, a GI, leather biker chaps and vest (for an infant - too cute), a milk maid, a parrot, and a renaisance-type costume. I'm close to done and its been fun - one of the fun parts, I think, is scouring garage sales and good will's finding accessories (I don't like to browse unless I'm looking for something in particular). I found knee-high patent leather boots for the sassy pirate, and lace up black high heeled boots for the saloon girls. Heck, I found the top for one saloon girl in the good will store - a black beaded tank with a v-neck and lots of dangling beads - its perfect! I'm rambling.

Getting my horse out for a ride tomorrow, which I truly enjoy, too. And we have a couple more camping trips planned before we put the camper away for the season. :-( But I'm even kinda looking forward to winter this year. We have to re-do our kitchen floor and I'm helping easy child get his "new to him" camper in shape for next camping season, so will be doing some work on it when the cold weather hits, which is pleasant.

Took a nice long buggy ride last weekend. Kids got bored so we picked up cans along the road. They probably have $20 or so in cans to recycle - it was a good time. Also got easy child 2's room painted. Finally!

Desperately need a date with husband. But we'll get there!

What a variety of ideas...I love them!

My girls and I went to a Buddhist temple today. We walked around and meditated in the temple as well as the meeting house. We visited two shrines and lit incense and acquired some reading materials. I can't wait to dive into them. After that we went for a long drive around Lake Carmel and then ate at a sushi place that was delish.

difficult child met an old friend for coffee at Starbucks and easy child and I are running up to the store for a few things.

Later, H and I will watch one of the netflix movies.

Tomorrow, we're either going up to Salem MA or jsut sticking around town and going apple picking and covering the pool.

On a regular basis, H and I hit up the library bi-weekly for new reading material, usually a movie once a week, and dinner out or take out, in. Now that we have a full house again, with traffic coming and going, it's been a bit of a trick trying to find our groove again.

Last week, Hubby and I looked at a co-housing project that just opened. I was curious to see how this would work. The weekend before, we went to a crafts fair. Tomorrow, we're going to lunch with a friend from high school, then going to a Halloween boutique. I have my family genealogy, and I'm working on the genealogy of my house. There's always something to read around here.

I've been getting creative with photo editing software. I have a plethora of pictures from the past couple months of Tink and her cheer squad, and every week I try to do something different with them. Last week, I took pictures of all the girls on the squad, paired them off, and morphed their faces. I posted the pictured on our Yahoo group site so the moms could guess who was who!

I have also been enjoyibg getting to know the personalities of my 2 cats. Coco is definitely MY baby, she sleeps with me every night, and refuses to let me read in bed (ever read a book while a cat was laying on it?). Ginger is a scaredy-cat (any little noise and she jumps 4 feet straight into the air) but a little sneak. I often catch her on the table (she jumps down as soon as she sees me) and she is forever running out the front door. Since we are in a condo, she gets into the hallway and starts to cry. Weirdo.

And reading. I have devoured 2 books in this past week alone.

Well, Let's see... last night (Fri) I went to a fundraiser dinner at a very fancy restaurant-with a Beatles tribute band playing... and had a nice time with some friends-husband stayed home. It was fun to laugh and see friends. Today husband and I will workout twice at the gym, I also row on the bay here near the ocean. Tomorrow I have to help my team park cars (run around a parking lot looking for empty spots), the parking lot and the fees we can charge is a donation to our team, so we all help on this one day a year. I like to read, I never have time it seems for that. I guess we all make time for the things we really want to do. I used to never have time to workout, lol.-Alyssa

I am crocheting a poncho for Kayla. It's something I can do while studying.

Can you tell I don't have much time for fun this quarter?

Thanks for the thread. I am going to see "fun" activities for myself starting 11/1/08. I have been raising children, working outside the home and doing mega community service work since the 60's. Although I will still be working and parenting easy child/difficult child I am determined to find some focus for my personal enjoyment. I haven't "played" in decades.

I'm following the thread and beginning to daydream abit. I love to cook and I love to read but I need something NEW. LOL DDD

H bought tickets to see Bonnie Raitt the other night at Foxwoods Casino (Friday night). We're not casino people, but after the show, which was amazingly awesome (love her!), we went into the gaming room and H and my friend's H played some blackjack. H won $70 and then we left.

We were out until 3 AM - that's really REALLY late for us and we felt it the next day...and we weren't even drinking, just tired! Lol.
