To parents of older difficult children

If you had asked me this question 5 years ago, I would have said, Absolutely No. My girl had severe behavior problems starting at age 13 which could have resulted in her death or mine. I lived for several years in fear and complete devastation. Then, one day, when an extremely bad incident occurred, she was arrested and subsequently, I sent her to Residential Treatment Center (RTC) where she remained for 18 months. She raged against Residential Treatment Center (RTC) for months, until she had an awakening. She has been back with me for over 2 years now, survived a traumatic event due the loss of everything we owned caused by Hurricane Katrina, 2 relocations since then and has done extremely well over all. She is a responsible, well adjusted young adult with goals for her future.

She has many genuinely good qualities which will serve her well in the future. I like the adult she is becoming. She, too, was a beautiful baby and child and I see that beauty shining through once again.
