CB, sorry about that. The body, (if you aren't diabetic) converts some of the excess glucose in your system into glycogen, which is a simple starch that can be stored in the liver and muscles.
A byproduct of using glycogen for energy is lactic acid, which is why your muscles burn if you overexert yourself.
Glycogen metabolism is referred to as anaerobic metabolism because it takes place along a different pathway that doesn't require O2 to turn it back into glucose.
Glucose require aerobic metabolism, which is why it is metabolized first under exercise. It's easier on the body and faster. Insulin plays it role in shuttling glucose in and out of cells, which is why diabetes cause such metabolic havoc and damages so many organs and systems.
