One day if you have time and inclination could you write down the brands and names so I can look online. The aged balsamic sounds particularly divine. I think this is a tremendous idea, the seeking out of precious condiments that enhance healthy things. I will see what I find online. Thank you Elsi.

The place I get mine is a boutique store that imports. You can go in and taste them all - they are all in big metal dispensers. So you can taste, mix, find pairings you like and them they fill their own labeled bottles with whTever you select. So I can’t point you to a brand. But I’m sure there are places like that in the Bay Area. I’m deep in flyover country, so if we have one here I can’t believe there isn’t similar in California!

It is a splurge for me, but when it’s high quality you don’t have to use much, so it lasts a while.

I dont like salad. Rarely eat it. When I do I use zero calorie dressing. Im not afraid to use artificial sweetners and none have ever made me sick. I do use Stevia the most.
For veggies I cook the low carb ones and add a slice of cheese. Veggies and cheese! Yum (to me).

My one poison is sugar. I believe it is the most unredeeming edible tidbit we can consume. Diabetes. Heart attacks. Cancer. It causes everything that is bad. I keep sugar at a distance. So many people my age and much younger have diabetes and borderline diabetes. I dont want to add to the odds of getting it.

Before I forget...if you are doing true exercise, than I think 900 might very well be too little. I don't know.
My doctor gave me this number based on the fact that I only do light exercise. Walking , at best a few times a week. Due to my quirky health issues, I might not do anything for several weeks. So...one might need to factor this into the equation.
However...general equation is the same.
by the way, even if I eat in a healthy manner, I too tend to put weight on if I go vegetarian or vegan. Weird.
Also... for me too Sugar is the enemy. Big weight gainer and trigger.

I’m about 5 foot 1.

Yes...I think it almost happens naturally on all these diets that are clearly low carb, somewhat low carb, kinda high protein or actually high protein. A thread of similarity. It seems to naturally happen that the calories end up being reduced.
My friends who are successful end up with the formula:
Reduced carb, reduced calories. Might not be exact...but that’s it generally.

I have also seen youtube videos (I think thats where I saw them) where Keto dieters eat about the same thing each meal every day to make sure they get rhe same input/calories each day. They may switch from one meat to another day to day or switch veggies but they try for close consistency.

Example since I sort of do this:

Breakfast is usually eggs or one egg, some people add sausage or bacon (sometumes I use turkey bacon but never regular bacon)

Lunch. Tuna salad or chicken salad or tuna with veggie. Or else tuna with a slice of melted cheese.

Dinner fist sized serving of meat with brocoli or cauliflower. I eat fish a lot rather than meat.

If needed only, snacks are cheese or nuts but no more than one serving

After 6pm nothing except water and herbal tea with Stevia/Truvia

SWOT. I eat almost exactly like you do. Except for lunch I will eat yoghurt and walnuts. Or a tablespoon of almond butter. I TRY not to eat after 2pm. Or 4pm. But nothing for sure after 6pm except for tea.

Except I eat some higher carb vegetables like carrots or green beans or spinach.

I noticed some similarities in all our eating styles.

I’ve had to reduce dairy. It upsets my stomach. I can have some, but have to pay attention. Feta cheese doesn’t bother me though. Thank goodness...because I really like it.

Swot...you reminded me about chicken salad...yum! I think I’ll make that this week.

Re health: I think I mentioned here how shocked I was when a former neighbor developed endometrial cancer and died quickly. It was devastating for her family. She was 60 or 61. She had some complications with her kidneys. Her doctor said it was all primarily caused by being overweight. Prior to this, I did not know that obesity could cause cancer. I had heard some talk about it being a possible contributor to breast cancer. But, not other cancers. Apparently what she had ...it is a large contributor. Then, of course there is heart disease and diabetes.

This was a sad story Nomad.
I think the medical professionals I see are extremely irresponsible about weight. What is it? Two thirds of people over 50 or whatever are overweight or obese? Give me a break.

The medical people I see would be completely satisfied with me at 25 pounds heavier than I am. Completely satisfied. Why? because I would be overweight...and not obese. Why?

After this thread I am revved up again to lose 15 pounds so that my BMI will be under 22 like that researcher. I was extremely comfortable at that weight in terms of movement, energy, less back pain. I am not uncomfortable now with a BMI of 24 or so, but why not go down?

The nutritionist said that it is better, older, to have a cushion of fat in case one gets severely ill. The statistics show that somewhat overweight people live slightly longer, among the elderly. They may. But like Elsi said. The issue is quality of life. Do I want to have years where I feel good, I live well? Or do I want to have a cushion of fat so that in my final illness I linger longer? It really makes no sense when you think about it.

Which is the beauty of this thread. It is provoking thought.

So I can’t point you to a brand.
I think the different shops must buy from the same vendors because I found the same names in the online stores. That sound delicious. OMG. But boy oh boy does the price shoot up quick. The going price online is like $18 or $19 for a half liter!! At least at $100 I would get free shipping.

Elsi. How many different bottles do you have on hand at a given time? I mean. I follow the leader. I am ready to buy 6 half bottles to get the free shipping. I go through a whole lot of olive oil, because that is because I cook with it. I would have to really hold the line on the olive oil at this price. But how many vinegars do you have?

Maybe I should wait until I get to Berkeley.

Final question. How do you do so many steps everyday?
In the morning , my hour run, a bit longer if I do more walking than running-- I don't come back int he door until I am at 10,000 steps. then there are the random steps from morning run/walk from 10-12-30pm that is easily 2500 steps then if I have time for an afternoon walk before I pick son up from work I get another 30 minutes in and that is an easy 4000 steps. (I do walk pretty fast) , then pick son up, home, make dinner, clean up from dinner, out for a 20 minute walk--rule I always go for a minimum 10 minute run OR 20 minute walk after I eat. Diabetes runs in my family and it has been proven walking after meals (minimum of 10 minutes) drastically lowers the odds.
so..
I put my fit bit on when I get up at 7am..I usually have 12-1300 random steps before my walk at 9am
7-9 AM RANDOM 1,200
9-10 am WALK/RUN 10,000
10-12:30 RANDOM 2,500
12:30-1 WALK 4,000
1- 5:30 RANDOM 2,500
5:30-6 WALK 4,000
Rest of the day 2,000
-----------------------------------------
26,200
I wear a fit bit alta.
I also have a charge 2... funny..one day I was wearing the charge and I was doing a lot of cleaning and had 47 flights of stairs..holy moly! our house has 3 full levels...I was up and down a lot.
I am not much for sitting. I get board..perhaps a bit add..ya think ..lol.

Why don't I get board walking? I n the morning I run to Thomas rhett, Chris Young, country stuff mainly
the rst I walk listening to novels.. I love to listen to novels. total stress relief. I don't like tv.

Elsi. How many different bottles do you have on hand at a given time?

I’m somewhat embarrassed to answer this one. :p I have quite a collection at the moment! I pick up at least a couple whenever we’re in the city. My shop sells different sizes, from little tasters for $5 to the half liter. I don’t use the olive oil for standard everyday cooking - I keep a big bottle of the grocery store stuff for that. But I always keep a large bottle of a good basic olive oil (varies seasonally) and a couple smaller bottles of my favorite flavored ones for dressings and marinades. I really like the Persian lime and there is an herb one also - Tuscan herb maybe? The gremalata (sp?) is a good one too. Then I always keep a big bottle of basic balsamic and a few smaller flavored bottles. Sicilian lemon, raspberry, Neapolitan herbs, and honey ginger are staples. Others I may pickup,in the little bottles for a specific recipe or just for fun. The thing I love is you can pair them - eg tuscan herb oil with lemon vinegar, he Persian lime and the honey ginger - and you have a quick and easy dressing or marinade - just shake it up. You can add other ingredients if you want to, but it really doesn’t need them. Weeknights I’ll shake one up, pour it over the fish, toss it into a salad while the fish cooks, and voila in ten minutes there’s dinner.

Tired, I’m so jealous of all your steps! Are you retired? I’m trying to figure out how I can make this happen. I freelance, so I have some flexibility, but the bottom line is my work keeps me chained to my desk for 7-8 hours a day at least. Longer if I’ve got a big project I’m working on. I make myself get up for breaks but they don’t add up to much. I get up at 5:30 to get my cardio and yoga or strength training in before I start but working from home - in a ranch style house - I don’t get much movement in the rest of the day. Even the laundry is right off the kitchen.

My exercise time is for music or podcasts. I hate TV also. But I’ve got my favorite music or an engrossing podcast I’m never bored, even on the bike or elliptical.

This thread is inspiring me also!

Edit: duh you are not retired - you are providing care for your disabled son. Silly of me - I forgot for a moment there.

TiredOut this is sooooo (gulp) hard to ask and of course you dont have to answer

I could run at 55 but my knees are getting bad at 65. So there. You know my age (blush). Would you share the area of your age?

The reason I ask is that I think it is possible to still do heavy workouts at say 55 but your joints are not as strong and you can hurt yourself more easily at say 65. The workouts we do have to be compatible with our bodies. I walk more than run now so that I don't need knee surgery. This is a common consequence for people who were active and are aging. Blahhhh!

When I worked at Applebee's I would do maybe 7000 steps before work to warm up and then one six/seven hour shift would take me to 15,000-17,000. Plus I was running around with heavy dishes! It was quite a workout! But it dis strain my knees and back (even the kids complained!) I got very sore and was advised to cut back.

I just dont want those who are not in the super shape you are in to try doing it. Wow, you really rock star!!!

I have definitely had to adjust as I’ve gotten older. I’m 50s but my doctor told me to stop running because it was aggravating back problems due to spinal stenosis. I was also having lots of problems with my feet. So they recommended something lower impact. Running In heat also made my neurological issues worse. I miss the running so much! I never got to complete the marathon I was training for. I do have several half marathons under my belt. I loved competing with myself and trying for personal best times etc. but time marches on and the body does succumb to wear and tear. Elliptical, stationary bike and ladylike walks through the woods will have to do now.

When working with elder care specialists with my grandparents we were told that the things that make the most difference as we age are strength training, balance training, and weight control. (A little extra isn’t terrible, but a lot extra breaks down joints and will put you in a wheelchair faster.) my mom is now taking strength and balance classes at the senior center and I plan to emulate her. I’ve got to get out of feeling competitive about my fitness or weight and think about the things I can do now that will make a difference in my independence level 20-30 years from now (assuming I’m so lucky). The elder care people were especially big on squats - gotta be able to get up out of a chair and off the toilet 20 years from now! ;) Taking care of my grandparents really changed my perspective on fitness, health and the point of it all. There’s no point in sticking with a so-called fitness routine that is actually tearing down my body!

That little bit of padding is a mixed blessing for sure! It can get you through something like pneumonia or flu and give you some extra time. My grandpa had a couple bouts and still had a couple good years after. We were able to get him down to Florida for a last visit with his sister, and he got to meet a couple new great great grands. But I’m starting to think like you. He lingered three weeks in his final days past taking in any food and very little water, due to that extra protective cushion. And what was the point at that point? It was really hard on all of us, most of all him. So much to think about with all this!

I think I will start squats. Doesnt sound bad :)

I guess I dont tend to think about if I live for thirty more years. I really hope not. I dont think there is much life left once you cant do what you love to do and your peers are gone and your kids need to care for you. I felt sorry for my dad at the end.

I believe, to the point of being sure, that we dont die...our energy lives forever and we come back to learn more as souls. Maybe here. Maybe another planet. I have no doubts of this. So I think early 80s is a good time to leave earth in this lifetime. I definitely never want my kids to have to decide what to do with my aging body. Or to watch severe deterioration. Or pity me. Or experience dementia.

But as long as I am alive I want to be active and productive. So I keep on truckin (I heard that once. Am not quite sure what it means but it sounds tough! :))

We had lunch with some people yesterday. One woman lost weight on WW eight years ago and kept it off all this time. She looks great. I was surprised that she ordered popcorn shrimp and fries. I ordered popcorn shrimp and a vegetable. I asked her what her secret to maintaining her weight is. She said when she feels like eating something “naughty,” like fries with lunch, she skips dinner. Normally, she has a light and proper dinner. Chicken and salad, for example. But normally, she wouldn’t have fries or only have one or two. Since she ate a large lunch, including greasy fries, she will skip dinner and do so happily. Now, she got fries out of her system. I enjoyed listening to her.
